  • 5. Eliminate the footnote. It points to an external publication that just elaborates on something already included in the Mission & Charter statement. If you're concerned about possible accusations of plagiarism, then just add something like "as defined by the IOM (now US National Academy of Medicine" to indicate the dimensions of quality so that the Mission & Charter statement is self-contained.
  • 4. Eliminate the phrase "at the time of this writing" in the first sentence under Work Products. The document is stamped with its approval date, and present tense verbs are used here; consequently, the phrase is redundant, as everything in the document may be understood to be true "at the time of this writing." Further, everyone anticipates that the mission may evolve, but then that requires additional review and approval and need not be foreshadowed in every document.
  • 2. Abbreviations (e.g., CDS) should be spelled out at first use. 3. Eliminate the unnecessary upper case: "Implementation Guide" (when not part of an actual title), "Standards," etc.
  • 1. (continued) I suggest this because the missions of the CQI and CDS WGs may become blurred in the minds of some, and adding "thereby" helps emphasize that the Clinical *Quality Information* WG (emphasis added) provides standards to measure and report quality information, which in turn can be used to improve quality.
  • 1. A friendly suggestion: To the first sentence in the charter ("CQI develops and maintains HL7 standards in support of our mission to measure, evaluate, report, and improve on the quality of health care. ") add the word "thereby" immediately before "improve" so that it reads "CQI develops and maintains HL7 standards in support of our mission to measure, evaluate, report, and thereby improve on the quality of health care."
